Why a football match goes beyond 90 minutes
Normal playing time and the final whistle are different things.
A standard match has two 45-minute halves. A shorter duration needs prior agreement and compliance with competition rules.
Added time compensates for lost playing time; the displayed allowance is a minimum. Half-time is normally limited to 15 minutes. Extra time, where required by competition rules, is separate from added time.
